It’s pretty evident that while Apple’s slogan is “it just works,” there are quite a few times when it just doesn’t. I personally love iOS 13 because dark mode is always on for me, and I can’t go back to light mode. IOS 13 introduced systemwide dark mode, Sign in with Apple, support for external storage with USB drives, street view in Maps, new ways to handle location data, swipe typing on the keyboard, and more. The legacy of Forstall’s disastrous Maps launch will always be what iOS 6 is known for, unfortunately. The launch of iOS 6 and Apple Maps was so bad that Tim Cook, who was CEO of Apple at that time, had to issue a statement on the Apple website, apologizing for the “frustrating caused by the Maps application.” Scott Forstall, who was Vice President of iOS software engineering at the time of the iOS 6 launch, did not want to sign his name in a letter apologizing for the shortcomings of the new Apple Maps service, and as a result, was fired. The issues pretty much revolved around incomplete or inaccurate data for landmarks, like completely missing cities and towns, obscured satellite images, locations that looked like they were out in the middle of the ocean, roads that didn’t exist, and more. Though Apple Maps was using a vector-based engine that allowed for smoother scrolling and it allowed turn-by-turn directions for the very first time, there were countless other problems with Apple Maps. It was a release that was more about refining the previous iOS 5, but it did add some big changes that would pave the way for the future of iOS: Passbook (which eventually becomes Wallet), Do Not Disturb, and it replaced the native Google Maps app with its own in-house solution: Apple Maps.Īpple Maps was an absolute mess that tainted the otherwise decent release of iOS 6. IOS 6 was the last skeuomorphic-designed iOS that would grace our iPhone screens. It was definitely one of the buggiest releases of iOS ever - hence it is one of the worst iOS versions to date. Though it did add some useful new features, iOS 11 was ridiculed because of its never-ending problems. Another bug was discovered in iOS 11.2, which did fix the date bug, but then added another bug for HomeKit users by rendering access to your HomeKit lights and appliances would not work. Battery life was also severely impacted once an iPhone was updated to iOS 11. This was patched, of course, but still, a very odd bug that spread like wildfire among the tech news blogs. For example, there was a very weird and specific bug in iOS 11.1.2 that made your iPhone crash on December 2 at 12:15 a.m. IOS 11 brought with it a lot of great new features: notifications were able to be displayed on the lock screen (after merging Notification Center with the lock screen), Control Center was redesigned to be more streamlined on a single page, Apple gave us the Files app, screen recording, basic drag-and-drop features, and more.īut it was also notoriously buggy and had a lot of issues. With a simple swipe up from the bottom of the screen, we had quick access to Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, airplane mode, and other frequently accessed settings. Though iOS 7 set the precedent for boring, flat design everywhere, it did give us the first iteration of Control Center, which is an ever-useful iOS utility. iOS 7 switched over to a new, lighter Helvetica typeface that was harder to read, and it was not always obvious what were actual buttons or not since there was only text. Using an Android phone showed me just how bad iOS notifications really areĪnd it wasn’t just the flat, lifeless design. I review phones for a living - here are the 10 apps I can’t live without IPhone Flip: what we know about Apple’s first foldable phone It also lacked the charm and delight of previous iOS versions. iOS 7 eliminated the skeuomorphism that Apple used for years and instead introduced a completely flat design interface that was a nightmare in terms of usability. When iOS first started, it was called iPhone OS, and it was very heavy on skeuomorphism - the concept of making digital items represent their real-world counterparts. Here’s a look at every version of iOS, ranked from worst to best. But each version of iOS has its own strengths and weaknesses, with some releases being better than others. IOS has certainly come a long way, with iOS 16 letting us do things on our iPhone 14 that we never thought was possible a decade ago. It has been 16 years since that announcement that changed the mobile industry as we know it today, we now have 16 versions of iOS software that power our iPhones. In 2007, Steve Jobs introduced the iPhone on the stage at Macworld Expo in San Francisco. Of course just using the top 3 knobs as a basic delay, and then gradually adding Modifiers and flipping output options is fairly straight forward - while the Spread and Scan controls take a long time to acclimatise to - not the theory necessarily - but successful application of those, and landing on a usable pattern! These few weeks later I’m kind of back in the nice-to-have camp again as the downside of slick and efficient demos - is that you’re rarely party to all the experiments that went wrong - and failed to fully yield musical output - and that is largely the challenge with the Habit - not that there aren’t great tones and patterns possible - but that eking them out is often tricky and overly time-consuming. Having then seen the excellent Andy Martin Demo and the output he was able to simply and effectively extract from the pedal I decided this would very much be a must have for me - and likely the most potent and practical of the trio as a regular floor-based stompbox. Upon watching the very first videos I was unsure of the pedal’s practical stompbox potential and kind of landed in the nice-to-have camp - where I thought the pedal might require a little too much hands-on input and manipulation to be deployed practically on the floor. So what of the Habit? Is that more a tabletop pedal or stompbox in nature - and how easily and practically can it be deployed in a floor-based environment? While I’ve found that I can use the MOOD to a degree as a bona fide stompbox - while some of its clever applications of course really require a tabletop environment too! I feel that the Blooper cannot really exist as a floor-based stompbox - such is its need for constant hands-on manipulation. In fact everyone I’ve seen use these fully properly does so within a tabletop setup typically. For those that come from a floor-based stompbox environment there is a question of compatibility, learning curve and indeed a whole process of adoption. While I was waiting for the Blooper to materialise which it did somewhat oddly via Kickstarter at the time - the MOOD kind of caught me completely by surprise - and I was unsure of functional and features overlap and overall usability - which meant that I acquired the MOOD somewhat later than intended.īoth those pedals are of a newish tabletop breed - really better suited to keyboard and modular synth type player who can tweak all those knobs in tandem and are already well used to doing such. I was onboard with the Blooper Bottomless Looper pretty much from the start - but then somewhat confused by the sudden unannounced arrival of the MOOD Ambience Generator - which leap-frogged the Blooper for an early release. And while we’ve often seen leading pedal luminaries collaborate before - this is the first official team-up - in fact a genuine Supergroup of Pedal Gurus! What wonders await! It has also recently added two key well-loved and celebrated pedal geniuses as staff members - first Tom Majeski, formerly of Cooper FX, and then Scott Harper of Knobs_Demos fame - both existing close collaborators of Joel Korte. And what better way to enjoy it to the fullest but by blasting its volume to the optimum. Since we love it so well, we just want the most out of it. When we use our iPhone, we expect it to perform at its best capability. We stay up-to-date on social media using it. IPhone is one of the best mobile phones available. We had craft parties to make pom poms, iron parties to get bunting just right, baking parties to practice desserts we would serve and sing-a-longs with my sisters who sang for the ceremony! The group effort just made us feel so loved, supported and pumped about our big day instead of stressed! We had so much help and support from friends and family (since we were planning the wedding from Rwanda!) and that just made the planning process so much more fun. Be expressive and creative and YOU! Don't be afraid to be too bright or too colorful or to cut your dress! Also, get as many people involved as possible. My advice for those planning right now is to feel free! Don't conform to tradition if thats not your thing. I loved it more than anything I saw on the rack! Then we cut out the appliques to construction a snazzy new back and straps. I sat with the seamstress for hours drawing out my ideas before we got it just the way I envisioned it! We removed the under layer of the dress that had lace appliques on it. Big congrats to Caitlyn + Joe and thanks so much to Rylee Hitchner for the photos!įor my dress, I decided to buy a slightly less expensive one so I could make it my own. Their wedding took place at the beautiful venue of Cedarwood Weddings in Nashville (the bride’s hometown) and their outdoor ceremony was perfect (especially with the giant paper flower arch Caitlyn and her friends made) for their bright fun vibe complete with lawn games + burgers. They wanted their wedding to be a colorful, casual celebration where they could just be comfortable and enjoy the time with friends + family (especially since they rarely see them!). Thus they knew from the get-go that they wanted to have some east African flair at their wedding! They did this by using Rwandan fabric or igitenge for – well everything! For the two years leading up to their August wedding, Caitlyn was in the Peace Corps in Rwanda teaching at a large government high school in the village, and Joe has lived in Kenya for the last four years doing sustainable and social business with internally displaced people with an organization called Uhuru Child. Our ribbons in white and beige can be tied around neutral-toned wrapping paper, and consider a sprig of foliage to really complete the vibe.Caitlyn + Joe live in east Africa. Whether they are on the actual gift table, added at the entrance or used to create party favors, wrapped gifts in white and beige will add some Christmas charm to your winter wedding. In the spirit of holiday gifting, another way to allude to the season (while staying on theme!) is to include the visual of wrapped gifts. They will set the scene while elevating your theme… and adding a dash of Christmas cheer! Include a few in your reception tablescapes or add them to your drink or dessert tables. However, a floral wreath in beige and white can be a subtle yet magical homage to the season at your winter wedding. You may think of wreaths as a classic Christmas decoration, usually in red, green and gold tones. The way to balance the Christmas themes of the season with your wedding planning is to embrace it, with a twist. However, this time of joy and family can actually be what makes your wedding extra special. One of your biggest hesitations for having a winter wedding may be how close it will be to the holidays. Special thanks to the contributors of the open-source code that was used in this project: the UBY project (mentioned above), and express.js.Ĭurrently, this is based on a version of wiktionary which is a few years old. I simply extracted the Wiktionary entries and threw them into this interface! So it took a little more work than expected, but I'm happy I kept at it after the first couple of blunders. The researchers have parsed the whole of Wiktionary and other sources, and compiled everything into a single unified resource. That's when I stumbled across the UBY project - an amazing project which needs more recognition. However, after a day's work wrangling it into a database I realised that there were far too many errors (especially with the part-of-speech tagging) for it to be viable for Word Type.įinally, I went back to Wiktionary - which I already knew about, but had been avoiding because it's not properly structured for parsing. This caused me to investigate the 1913 edition of Websters Dictionary - which is now in the public domain. I initially started with WordNet, but then realised that it was missing many types of words/lemma (determiners, pronouns, abbreviations, and many more). The dictionary is based on the amazing Wiktionary project by wikimedia. And since I already had a lot of the infrastructure in place from the other two sites, I figured it wouldn't be too much more work to get this up and running. I had an idea for a website that simply explains the word types of the words that you search for - just like a dictionary, but focussed on the part of speech of the words. Both of those projects are based around words, but have much grander goals. For those interested in a little info about this site: it's a side project that I developed while working on Describing Words and Related Words. Worse than the system not finding the command is the possibility that you will cause a function to be performed that you didn't want to happen.įor example, in the 'vi' editor, 'j' means to move down one line and 'J' means to join two lines together. For instance, if you want to list your files with the 'ls' command, if you enter 'LS' you will be told "command not found." Be careful when you're typing in commands - whether a character is upper or lower case does make a difference. When interacting with the Unix based operating system, like Linux, one of the first things you need to know is that, unlike other computer systems you may be accustomed to, everything in Unix is case-sensitive. This can go a long way to remembering the command later. The best thing you can do to remember what commands stand for is to find out what word the command is an abbreviation for. In those old systems, the shorter the input was, the better as it meant less time waiting to issue your command and receive output. This is because the roots of the Linux command line are from systems where a single letter entry could take a significant amount of time to travel from a terminal, to a central server and back to the terminal where it was printed onto a roll of paper. The commands used at the command line may seem a little cryptic due to their tendency to be very short. Depending on the environment, they may include colors, special characters, and other elements like the current time, in order, for instance, to make the prompt more informative or visually pleasing, to distinguish sessions on various machines, or to indicate the current level of nesting of commands.Ī Little History. It is common for prompts to be modifiable by the user. On many Unix system and derivative systems, it is common for the prompt to end in a $ or % character if the user is a normal user, but in a # character if the user is a superuser ("root" in Unix terminology). A prompt usually ends with one of the characters $, %, #, :, > and often includes other information, such as the path of the current working directory. Its intent is to literally prompt the user to take action. Also, some functions can only be accessed through the command line, so if you want to truly understand your new system it is worth learning.Ī command prompt (or just prompt) is a sequence of (one or more) characters used in a command-line interface to indicate readiness to accept commands. If you know the correct commands, then you can start any program, check your computer's status, and see what files you have stored without having to find the listing in your menu. The command line is an interface that allows you to talk directly to your computer using words called commands. When we refer to a Linux terminal it's a software application, and if you want to get technical it's a terminal emulator." -Akkana Peck This is a term leftover from the olden days of interfacing with mainframes via dumb terminals which had no processing power of their own they were pretty much just monitors and keyboards. When you read about using the command line, which is often abbreviated to CLI for 'command-line interface', they usually mean typing commands into a terminal. The Linux command-line gives you a lot of power - it lets you do tasks that are difficult or impossible with the GUI, and for tasks that you do a lot, such as launching the same applications everyday, it's often faster.
